I have to admit that I am a big Joe Quesada fan.  Been so for years.  These days he does a lot of his work digitally, that is when he finds time to draw.  Last night on twitter Joe talked shop about some of the specifics of what he does.  What specific tools he uses, what settings he uses, all sorts of digital trickery.  Click through for the whole conversation.

That doodle is one of many and not indicative of where the final look will end up.

@JoeQuesada Curious what’s keeping you from taking that step into the world of 100% digital. I did it about & it has been very rewarding

@thatpetewoods I am drawing all digital

@JoeQuesada Oh, sorry- I looked at your album and saw that Iron Man piece you penciled- that’s why I asked!

@thatpetewoods If I’m thinking of the same cover you are. I bounce back and forth from digital finished to pencil sometimes.

@thatpetewoods On that one I did the layout digitally including 3D Sketchup stuff, but decided to lightbox and pencil the finish.

But all prelim work is done exclusively on the Cintiq now. It saves time and using layers in PS is also sweet.

@JoeQuesada do you have any custom cintiq settings secrets for us mortals ?
JoeQuesada
JoeQuesada JoeQuesada
@FredRH no real magical custom settings. However, I only use the pencil tool for finished line work. Do not use the brush.
JoeQuesada
JoeQuesada JoeQuesada
The brush tool leaves a fuzzy line not really suited for final print. I use between a 5-40 pixel diameter depending on the line and art size

Size Jitter contriol set on Pen pressure, Angle Jitter OFF, Roundness Jitter OFF and Smoothing clicked on.

@JoeQuesada Do you prefer shape dynamics on or off? For some reason when I’m only doing prelims I like it off,but if I’m finishing it’s on.
JoeQuesada
JoeQuesada JoeQuesada
@TomAhhr Yes, sorry, Shape Dynamics are on, hence the Pen Pressure setting on the Size Jitter.

@JoeQuesada where is the smoothing option?
JoeQuesada

@DennisCalero Smoothing option is on the brush presets

Also, very important, draw at 400 dpi
JoeQuesada
JoeQuesada JoeQuesada
400 dpi will give you a better final product, especially for print and will make line work smoother.

Also don’t be concerned if your pencil line on screen looks pixelated at times, print it out and you’ll see it smooths out.

Plus, the chicks dig guys who draw in 400 dpi

@JoeQuesada Do they use the 21UX Cintiq or the 12WX? I have the 12WX @wacom Cintiq and it has enhanced my productivity 10 fold. #yearn412ux

@FourteeTwo Then I lightboxed that sketch and did a quickee pencil. http://yfrog.com/h8qraqsj

@FourteeTwo I have both. I have two Sintiq 21 UX, one at home, one at Marvel and a 12WX for travel when I’m on deadline

@JoeQuesada Dang. Nice set-up. I guess I’m heading in the right direction for Cintiq though. Is there a nib you recommend for the pen?
JoeQuesada
JoeQuesada JoeQuesada
@FourteeTwo I just use the nib that came already attached to the pen.
Mike Vance

@JoeQuesada Ah, you should try the felt nib if you still have the spares. It makes it feel like you’re drawing on paper. :)

@FourteeTwo Thanks for the tip! Aha, get it!!!
